BASRA: Christians in Basra Governorate marked the festive season by celebrating Christmas and New Year. Churches in the region opened their doors to well-wishers, who gathered to offer congratulations and partake in the occasion after Eid prayers.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Bishop Imad Al-Banna, the assistant diocese in Basra and the South, highlighted that this year’s celebrations were centered around prayer and ritual ceremonies conducted in a festive manner. The ceremonies included prayers and supplications for security, safety, and peace in Iraq and across the globe. In addition, there were prayers dedicated to the martyrs and victims of wars and disasters. The Diocese also welcomed well-wishers, including important figures and representatives from civil society organizations.

Al-Banna further mentioned that the celebrations aimed to spread diverse popular cultures. Events included Santa Claus celebrations for families and children, extending to various segments of Basra society, including orphanages and elderly homes.

Sheikh Abbas Al-Fadhli, head of the Basra Tribes and Components Council, stated that a council delegation visited several Basra churches serving Syriac Catholics and Chaldeans. The visit was intended to offer congratulations to the Christian community on the occasion of the birth of Jesus Christ and the advent of the New Year. He emphasized that the visit was a gesture of fraternal communication among all components of Iraqi society in Basra Governorate, aimed at consolidating the principle of peaceful coexistence and brotherhood.

Al-Fadhli underscored that these strong communal ties are a social legacy that has been passed down through generations, reflecting the unity and cohesion of the people of the province.
