Baghdad: The International Stabilization Team in Iraq held its regular meeting, co-chaired by the Deputy Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, Farhad Nimatullah Hussein, and the German Ambassador to Iraq, Christine Hohmann. The meeting saw the participation of representatives from diplomatic missions operating in Iraq, various government officials, and governors of the liberated governorates.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Deputy Secretary-General emphasized in his address, delivered on behalf of the Secretary-General, the priority given by the Prime Minister to the issue of displaced persons. He highlighted that the government, in collaboration with international partners and humanitarian organizations, has implemented extensive programs to support displaced persons and vulnerable groups, aiming to improve their conditions and ensure a sustainable life for them.

The Deputy Secretary-General further elaborated on the government’s efforts to complete essential infrastructure and create the necessary conditions for the return of displaced persons. This includes community reconciliation efforts and building a stable life in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq, the National Security Chancellery, the Joint Operations Command, and other relevant authorities.

The German Ambassador, Christine Hohmann, underscored the importance of establishing appropriate conditions and basic infrastructure before displaced persons can return. She expressed the international community’s eagerness to exchange information and contribute to providing the necessary support for their return.

The meeting included a comprehensive review of the challenges associated with the return of displaced persons, government efforts to offer basic services, secure essential needs, and the role of the National Committee to Combat Violent Extremism in promoting community peace. It also addressed the facilitation of issuing official documents for displaced persons and the disbursement of compensation amounts.

Additionally, the United Nations plan to support the Iraqi government in returning Iraqis from Al-Hol and Al-Roj camps for the period 2025-2027 was presented, along with an overview of the achievements of the International Stabilization Fund concerning projects and specializations under implementation.

The meeting concluded with a call to develop future plans and enhance joint cooperation to ensure the successful return of displaced persons, achieve lasting stability, and ultimately close the displacement file.
