York County: A police officer was killed and at least five others were injured by gunfire in a hostage-taking incident at a hospital in York County, Pennsylvania, according to state officials.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the suspect, Diogenes Ortiz, entered a hospital in York County, carrying a gun and plastic ties around 10:30 a.m. State officials detailed that Ortiz went to the intensive care unit and took several hospital employees hostage.

Ortiz shot a doctor, a nurse, and a guard at the hospital, all of whom are now in stable condition, officials explained. Three police officers were shot during the incident, one of whom died. The other two officers were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition.

Law enforcement from multiple agencies responded to the scene, attempting to negotiate with Ortiz. However, Ortiz emerged from the intensive care unit holding a hospital staff member at gunpoint, with his hands bound with plastic ties.

York County District Attorney Tim Parker stated, “The officers had no way to negotiate, and they opened fire, killing Ortiz and preventing further loss of life.” Authorities are investigating the incident, and the motive for the crime is not yet known.
