Doha: Qatari Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani warned on Saturday that any attack on Iranian nuclear facilities would lead to the pollution of the Gulf waters and a major environmental disaster threatening Qatar and neighboring countries, noting that this scenario could leave the region without potable water or sufficient food for the population.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, in an interview with American media figure Tucker Carlson, Al Thani explained that some Iranian nuclear facilities are closer to Doha than Tehran, which makes any attack on them a direct threat to Qatar and the Gulf states.

The Qatari Prime Minister stressed that any military strike against Iran would not go unanswered, saying: “If Iran is attacked, it will not respond to distant targets, but will respond within the region. No one wants that.”

He also stressed that Qatar will not support any military action against Iran, expressing hope for a diplomatic solution between Iran and the United States, as an attack on nuclear facilities could lead to a large-scale war involving the entire region.

Regarding the environmental repercussions, Al Thani pointed out that an attack on nuclear facilities could lead to a radiation leak, which would directly affect water and food sources in the region. He stated: “If an attack occurs on Iranian nuclear facilities, the waters of the Gulf will be polluted, which means that Qatar, the UAE, and Kuwait will face severe water and food shortages.”

Al Thani explained that the presence of nuclear weapons in the region is undesirable. He mentioned that although there are often claims about Iran nearing the possession of a nuclear weapon, no clear evidence has been seen. Iran has affirmed its program is peaceful, and Qatar is closely monitoring developments.

He further explained that he had recently held talks with Iranian leaders, including the Supreme Leader and the Iranian President, to reach diplomatic solutions, emphasizing that Qatar maintains continuous contacts with Iran regarding cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

On the topic of US sanctions on Iran, Al Thani stated that the State of Qatar opposes the policy of sanctions, considering them “ineffective and harming peoples rather than regimes.” He added that despite the sanctions, Iran continues to sell oil using different currencies and methods, and any solution to the crisis must come through dialogue, not economic or military pressure.
