Algiers: Algerian official media reported on Wednesday that Algeria and Somalia have called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council to address the Israeli attacks on Syria. Algerian television stated that these two nations have requested this urgent meeting to discuss the repercussions of what they referred to as the “Zionist occupation’s attacks” on Syria.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the request for the emergency session came after consultations and agreement with the Arab Group in New York. This move underscores the growing concern among Arab countries regarding the Israeli military actions. The Israeli army has been conducting airstrikes on Syria almost daily, leading to casualties among civilians and the destruction of military assets, including sites, vehicles, and ammunition belonging to the Syrian army.

There has been widespread condemnation from Arab countries and international organizations, urging the international community to exert pressure on Tel Aviv to cease its operations against Syrian sovereignty. This call for action follows media reports that Israeli forces had moved beyond the buffer zone in southwestern Syria.

Israel’s recent activities have involved altering the status of the buffer zone with Syria, leveraging changes in the region after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024. The Israeli forces’ entry into the buffer zone in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights has been deemed a violation of the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement by the United Nations. Despite this, Israel has declared its intention to maintain control over the area, further complicating the situation.
