Baghdad: The Parliamentary Legal Committee announced that a new amendment to the electoral law has been submitted to the committee, despite the government's confirmation that the elections will be held according to the current law. According to National Iraqi News Agency, Committee Vice Chairman Mohammed Anouz stated that the proposal was submitted by a number of MPs, with the support of more than 10 members, and is scheduled to be discussed in the committee at the end of this week or the beginning of next week. Anouz highlighted the existence of a divide within the House of Representatives, with some members supporting the amendment of the electoral law while others oppose it. He noted that necessary legislative steps will be undertaken, and the issue could be resolved through a vote by members of the House of Representatives in forthcoming sessions. He outlined key points of the new amendment, which include prohibiting influence-peddling by candidates holding government positions, necessitating the revo cation of their powers, and requiring their resignations six months prior to the elections. Additionally, the amendment proposes a 20/80 ratio of votes for lists, preventing top winners on a single list from transferring their surplus votes to another list, alongside the suspension of projects and provision of bonuses.
