Syria: A Doctor Accused of Turning a Military Hospital into a “Human Slaughterhouse” Arrested

Baghdad: The Syrian Interior Ministry reported on Wednesday the arrest of a doctor accused of committing “medical crimes” against detainees during the rule of former President Bashar al-Assad. The doctor, Bassam Youssef Salman Ali, was an officer at Tishreen Military Hospital and is alleged to have transformed the facility into a “human slaughterhouse.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Syrian Interior Ministry released a statement on its Telegram page detailing the arrest. The statement emphasized that the Damascus Security Directorate successfully apprehended the accused doctor. It highlighted that Bassam was deeply involved in the medical crimes perpetrated against detainees, including acts of torture and killing.

The ministry’s statement further elaborated on Bassam’s activities, indicating his role in the human organ trade and the blackmailing of detainees’ families. He is accused of being complicit in the torture and execution of detainees by administering lethal substances, actions that starkly contravene medical and humanitarian laws.

The statement concluded by affirming that authorities are actively probing Bassam’s criminal activities to uncover more offenses committed during his tenure under the previous regime. The goal is to ensure that he faces justice and receives appropriate punishment for his alleged crimes.
