Brussels: Former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and criticized the European Union’s response as lacking. Borrell claims that Israel’s actions in Gaza amount to the largest ethnic cleansing operation since the end of World War II, and he expressed disappointment in the EU’s failure to take decisive action.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Borrell chastised the EU for not fully utilizing its influence over Israel, stating that merely expressing regret was inadequate. He highlighted Europe’s failure to fulfill its moral and humanitarian duties towards Gaza, suggesting that the EU has the capacity to affect change but chooses not to act.
Borrell pointedly remarked on Europe’s role in the conflict, noting that the EU provides a significant portion of the weapons used in Gaza. He argued that if the EU genuinely believed in the severity of the situation, it would reduce arms supplies and leverage the Association Agreement to enforce international humanitarian law, instead of simply voicing complaints.
