Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized that Israeli expansion in Syria poses a significant threat to the country’s stability and security. In a joint press conference with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, held after a tripartite meeting in Ankara, Fidan stated that Turkey has been engaged in intensive diplomatic efforts since the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime on January 8, 2024.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Fidan outlined that the meeting covered Syria’s ongoing issues and regional challenges, with a focus on finding collaborative solutions. He highlighted the threat posed by Israeli expansion, urging its cessation to safeguard Syria’s security. Additionally, Fidan underscored preventing terrorist organizations from exploiting the Syrian situation as a priority for both Damascus and Turkey.

Fidan also reiterated the importance of addressing the terrorist threat from ISIS, which was a topic of discussion in the meeting. He mentioned ongoing efforts to lift international sanctions on Syria and tackle economic challenges while also addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, in collaboration with Jordan.

Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi expressed alignment with Turkey and Syria in supporting Syria’s security and sovereignty, while coordinating efforts to end Israeli aggression. He also stressed the importance of combating terrorism, describing the release of Israeli-American soldier Idan Alexander from Gaza as a step towards a comprehensive agreement.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani called for halting Israeli attacks and warned against delays in implementing an agreement between the government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). He announced plans for new diplomatic missions in Turkey and lauded the disbandment of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) as a positive step for regional stability.

Al-Shaibani emphasized Syria’s territorial integrity and ongoing efforts to unify the country under central authority, ensuring equal rights for Kurdish citizens. He warned that delays in implementing the national agreement with SDF could lead to foreign intervention and separatist movements, advocating for a unified Syria as the ultimate goal.
