Stockholm: The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Bilateral Relations, Ambassador Mohammed Hussein Mohammed Bahr al-Uloom, conducted a series of political consultations with the Swedish Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dag Hartelius, in Stockholm. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations between Iraq and Sweden across various sectors.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Hartelius highlighted the historical ties between the two nations and expressed Sweden’s commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation in multiple areas. Ambassador Bahr al-Uloom underscored Iraq’s dedication to fortifying relations with Sweden based on mutual respect and shared interests.

Addressing regional issues, the Undersecretary outlined Iraq’s foreign policy, which prioritizes “productive diplomacy” to achieve economic integration with neighboring countries and to establish stability and peace. He emphasized Baghdad’s emerging role as a key diplomatic hub in the region, citing events like the Arab Summit in Baghdad and Iraq’s involvement in mediating regional disputes.

The discussions underscored the importance of ongoing coordination to reduce regional tensions, with a strong emphasis on the role of diplomacy in crisis resolution. Both parties stressed the necessity of enhancing cooperation in combating terrorism and addressing environmental challenges.

The Swedish Minister acknowledged the notable improvements in Iraq’s security and economic conditions and voiced Sweden’s interest in expanding economic ties with Baghdad. Ambassador Bahr al-Uloom urged Sweden to reevaluate its security advisories concerning Iraq, arguing that they do not adequately reflect the current positive developments. He also highlighted the significance of convening the Iraqi-Swedish Joint Committee and encouraged Swedish businesses to invest in Iraq’s burgeoning market.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to maintaining communication and activating follow-up mechanisms to implement agreed-upon initiatives, aiming to strengthen dialogue and benefit both countries.
