Gaza: The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, confirmed that the volume of aid sent to Gaza is not commensurate with the scale of the humanitarian tragedy the Strip is witnessing. Lazzarini said in a press statement today: “The famine in Gaza can be stopped if there is political will, and what we are demanding is not impossible.” He called for enabling the United Nations to fulfill its role in providing aid to the needy population and protecting their dignity.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Lazzarini announced on Friday that 900 aid trucks had entered Gaza over the past two weeks, representing only 10% of the daily needs of the Strip’s population. He emphasized that stopping the current famine in Gaza requires political will.
He called for allowing UN agencies and humanitarian organizations to resume their work in Gaza, after the entry of aid trucks was halted since March 2.
Lazzarini explained that during the previous ceasefire, UNRWA and other organizations succeeded in bringing 600-800 aid trucks into Gaza daily.
