Babylon: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has confirmed the imminent declaration of Babylon Governorate as an industrial city.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office revealed that al-Sudani inaugurated the mills of the Union Company for the production of fine flour in the Madhatiya district of Babylon Governorate. This project boasts an annual capacity of one million tons, marking a significant milestone 11 months after its foundation stone was laid.

Al-Sudani conducted a tour of the mill complex, examining the production stages and the product exhibition. He noted that the production now meets approximately 50% of the local market’s needs, which previously relied on imports costing over $750 million annually. During his visit, al-Sudani expressed appreciation for the workers’ efforts in advancing the industrial sector and bolstering the economy.

The Prime Minister highlighted the government’s initiatives to promote national industry and support the private sector, essential for implementing projects and stimulating economic growth. He emphasized the measures taken to ensure food security and streamline trade processes amidst regional and global challenges. Al-Sudani reassured citizens of the country’s capability to provide local products alongside imports, aiming to lower food prices in the domestic market.

Furthermore, al-Sudani declared that the current year is dedicated to Iraqi industry, with the government actively inaugurating new factories and laying foundations for future ones. He noted that Babylon Governorate is on the verge of being officially recognized as an industrial city, following the completion of necessary site requirements for new industrial zones, supported by the federal government. The governorate is currently home to over 2,000 operational factories across various sectors.
