Istanbul: An emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers took place today in Istanbul, prompted by an initiative from Iraq, to discuss the repercussions of recent attacks by Israel on Iran and their broader implications for regional stability and security. The meeting brought together key Arab leaders to address pressing concerns over the escalating conflict.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Iraqi delegation was led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein. In his address, Hussein highlighted the urgency of the situation and Iraq’s proactive role in calling for the meeting. He explained that Iraq is closely monitoring the developments due to its strategic geographic and political positioning near the conflict’s epicenter.

Hussein stressed that the threat extends beyond Iran, affecting the entire region. He called for decisive collective actions and urged engagement with European countries and direct dialogue with the United States. He also warned about the potential expansion of the conflict, including threats to nuclear, oil, and gas facilities, and the severe economic implications of closing the Strait of Hormuz, which could result in a significant disruption of oil supplies.

The Iraqi Foreign Minister underscored the unprecedented nature of the conflict, emphasizing the vulnerability of the region to its consequences. He advocated for joint mechanisms for continuous communication and assessment, given the region’s fragile state and escalating risks.

Hussein also called for the involvement of the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General in maintaining international peace and security. He acknowledged the mediating efforts of Oman between Iran and the United States and urged a return to diplomatic negotiations to de-escalate tensions.

Closing his speech, Hussein reiterated Iraq’s firm stance against violations of its airspace and sovereignty, condemning Israel’s actions and holding it accountable for its aggressive measures. The Arab nations present commended Iraq’s initiative in organizing the meeting, recognizing its vital role in fostering Arab unity and seeking a collective approach to mitigate the conflict and protect regional security.
