Baghdad: The Presidency of the Republic welcomed the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)’s commencement of the process of handing over its weapons on Saturday.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Presidency’s media office issued a statement expressing approval of the PKK’s decision to begin the disarmament process. This is seen as a significant historic step towards ending the armed conflict and security breaches that have persisted for decades, resulting in numerous casualties. The move is expected to enhance opportunities for peace in the region.

The Presidency has called for a “full commitment to maintaining security and stability and supporting the legitimate rights of all parties.” It emphasized that this development is crucial for consolidating security and stability in the region. The disarmament process is anticipated to strengthen bilateral relations between Iraq and Turkey, grounded in mutual respect for sovereignty and ensuring the security and safety of their citizens.

The Presidency reiterated its “full support for the success of this step until the end” and committed to contributing in various ways to achieve the objectives of moving beyond the painful past. It aims to foster a new era of cooperation and joint coordination for the benefit of all involved parties.
