Tehran: Iran has accused Israel of attempting to assassinate its president, Masoud Pezeshkian, during a high-level meeting of the Supreme National Security Council. The alleged attempt occurred amidst ongoing military exchanges between Tehran and Tel Aviv, referred to as the “12-Day War.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Fars News Agency, which is affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards, reported that an airstrike targeted the meeting in the basement of a building in western Tehran on June 16. The precision of the attack has led security agencies to launch an internal investigation into a potential security breach or presence of a “spy” within the government. Sources revealed that President Pezeshkian sustained minor injuries to his foot while escaping through an emergency exit after the explosion. However, details regarding the extent of damage or other casualties were not disclosed.

The incident has been confirmed by Ali Larijani, an advisor to the Supreme Leader, and Mohsen Rezaei, a commander in the Revolutionary Guards, though they withheld further information. This development has heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, with Tehran threatening a “calculated and painful response” to the assassination attempt.
