Baghdad: The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Trk, has called on the international community to exert maximum pressure on the Israeli occupation authorities to immediately halt the ongoing massacres in the Gaza Strip.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Trk expressed deep outrage at what he described as the “indescribable daily tragedy” unfolding in both Gaza and the West Bank. He condemned the “destruction, killing, and systematic stripping of Palestinians’ humanity on a daily basis.”

Trk stressed the urgent need for tangible international action to ensure Israel complies with its obligations to provide adequate food and life-saving necessities to the population of Gaza. “Gaza has become a grim scene of deadly attacks and utter devastation, where children are dying before the eyes of the world,” he said.

The High Commissioner noted that over 200,000 Palestinians have been killed or injured since October 7, 2023, according to medical sources in the Strip-amounting to roughly 10% of Gaza’s total population. He also condemned the killing of more than 300 UN staff members who died while performing their humanitarian duties during Israeli military operations.

Trk reaffirmed the United Nations’ readiness to support the Palestinian people in building their state based on human rights and the rule of law. He emphasized that programs aimed at supporting victims and survivors will play a key role in the pursuit of justice and accountability when the time comes.
