Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani affirmed that the human rights file in Iraq has witnessed positive progress since the government assumed responsibility more than two years ago. He stated, “Iraq has signed eight major international human rights agreements out of nine United Nations agreements.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Prime Minister’s Media Office issued a statement indicating that Al-Sudani met with the Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations, Ms. Nada al-Nashif, on Monday. The meeting, which also included the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Mohammed al-Hassan, focused on enhancing cooperation with the Commission. They discussed establishing permanent formulas for ongoing technical support and assistance in securing rights, as well as building the capacity and training of Iraqi cadres to better manage the human rights file and fulfill Iraq’s commitments.

Al-Sudani expressed appreciation for the efforts of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, emphasizing the government’s focus on developing cooperation with the commission. He highlighted the importance of developing programs that respect human rights in Iraq while considering the cultural and social values and traditions of the Iraqi people.

He noted that Iraq’s signing of eight major international human rights agreements out of nine UN conventions marks significant progress since the government took office over two years ago.

Nada Al-Nashif conveyed the greetings of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to the Prime Minister, praising the excellent joint cooperation, particularly in sustainable development, environment and climate, and good governance. She expressed her support for the Iraqi government’s approach to promoting pluralism locally and regionally and affirmed its respect for the rights of all components.
