Foreign Minister and UN Secretary-General Discuss Procedures for Ending UNAMI

New york city: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, met today, Tuesday, July 29, 2025, with UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres, at the UN headquarters in New York City.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, during the meeting, the two sides discussed the course of relations between Iraq and the United Nations and prospects for joint cooperation in the next phase. They also reviewed the vital role the international organization has played in supporting Iraq over the past years, particularly in the areas of stability and strengthening the political process.

The Minister expressed his thanks to the Secretary-General for his participation in the recent Arab Summit, appreciating his supportive positions on regional issues, especially his continued support for the rights of the Palestinian people.

Fuad Hussein, on behalf of the Iraqi government, conveyed Iraq's appreciation to the Secretary-General for his principled and unwavering positions on regional issues, foremost among them the Palestinian issue, given the critical circumstances it is currently experiencing.

The meeting also addressed the issue of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), discussing and following up on the procedures related to concluding the mission's work by the end of this year, in accordance with plans agreed upon with the United Nations and in line with the positive developments in Iraq.

The two sides also discussed developments in the region, with a particular focus on the Syrian issue. The importance of reaching a comprehensive political settlement that guarantees Syria's unity and stability and contributes to strengthening the security of the region as a whole was emphasized.
