Iraq and Lebanon Ink Agreement on Transfer and Exchange of Convicted Persons

Baghdad: Under the patronage of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, Baghdad hosted today, Thursday, the second session of the Iraqi-Lebanese Joint Committee, during which a bilateral agreement was signed on the transfer and exchange of convicted persons between the two countries.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the agreement was signed by Iraqi Minister of Justice Khalid Shwani on behalf of Iraq, while Lebanon was represented by Minister of Trade, head of the joint committee, Amer Al-Basssat.

Minister Shwani emphasized that the agreement reflects the Iraqi government’s commitment to strengthening judicial and legal cooperation with friendly and brotherly nations. He noted that it provides legal mechanisms that ensure respect for human rights and facilitate the implementation of sentences in line with national laws and international standards.

He further added that this step represents a significant milestone in Iraqi-Lebanese relations, as it addresses the situation of convicted nationals of both countries and allows them to serve their sentences in their homelands, thereby achieving humanitarian, social, and legal objectives.

The agreement also aligns with the government’s broader approach to expanding international cooperation and complements Iraq’s efforts to conclude similar agreements with other countries. This move aims to reinforce Iraq’s regional and international standing in the judicial and legal fields.
