EU Pledges Support for Iraq’s Electoral Process

Baghdad: The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) affirmed its commitment to democratic standards in elections on Wednesday, while the European Union Mission expressed its support for the electoral process in Iraq. A statement issued by the Commission stated that “Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Omar Ahmed Mohammed, received a delegation of experts from the European Union Mission, represented by Anna Wiktorowska, Head of the EU Expert Mission, Mariusz Wojtan, Electoral Expert, and Marianna Skoppa, Legal Expert, in the presence of the Head of the Electoral Administration and members of the Board of Commissioners.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Chairman of the Board emphasized “the importance of the role of international election observation in ensuring transparency and integrity through the contribution of observation teams in monitoring the voting process and other procedures, evaluating the work, and submitting their reports on election day.” For her part, Anna affirmed “the support of the European Union Mission for the electoral process and all governorate electoral offices,” praising “the efforts made by the Commission in the preparation stages of the electoral process.”

The statement indicated that “there is mutual trust between the Commission and those interested in electoral affairs through the Commission’s publication of regulations and procedures to the public to demonstrate the transparency of its work.” It is worth noting that the Independent High Electoral Commission continues its meetings with the United Nations, the European Union, and all ambassadors to support the upcoming electoral event by deploying international observers on election day.
