Kirkuk: President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Pavel Talabani, emphasized that Kirkuk was liberated through democratic means rather than warfare. This statement came as a response to the remarks made by Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, who had described Kirkuk as occupied and in need of liberation to be returned to Kurdistan.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, during a mass rally held at the PUK headquarters, Talabani addressed his supporters and reiterated that the liberation of Kirkuk was achieved through democracy, unity, and solidarity among different community components. He underscored that this liberation was not a result of war but rather a concerted effort to uphold the rights of the people through genuine support and not through false promises or boasting.

Talabani highlighted that despite opposition from several parties when asserting Kirkuk’s liberation, the current governance in the region serves all communities without discrimination. He acknowledged the contributions of Kurds, Arabs, Turkmen, Christians, and Kaka’is, affirming that these communities have been integral to achieving the current state of governance.

He conveyed a heartfelt message to the diverse communities in Kirkuk, pledging to respect their identities and rights. Talabani called for their support and trust, assuring them of the PUK’s commitment to defending their interests both in Baghdad and other forums.

Furthermore, Talabani stressed the importance of education, particularly for Kurdish students in Kirkuk, asserting that they must have the right to study in their mother tongue. He reaffirmed the PUK’s stance of supporting and strengthening Kirkuk’s position within Baghdad, promising not to abandon the city’s diverse populace.
