Baghdad: Independent Kurdish politician Mahmoud Othman has disclosed an American initiative aimed at enhancing the Iraqi economy in collaboration with the Iraqi government. Othman emphasized that resolving the issue of armed factions is contingent upon an agreement between the United States and Iran, with expectations that the coming months will see a definitive resolution.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Othman stated that the US Special Envoy to Iraq, Mark Savaya, is spearheading the American project to develop the Iraqi economy. Savaya, originally from Tel Keif, possesses a deep understanding of Iraq’s current situation and has extensive connections with various Iraqi figures. This background, coupled with his influence in former US President Donald Trump’s electoral success among Arab voters, positions him as a significant player in the ongoing developments.

Addressing the complex security concerns, Othman highlighted that disarming armed factions hinges on a US-Iran agreement. Should such an agreement be reached, the issue may be set aside. However, in the absence of an accord, the US is prepared to take decisive measures to disarm these groups.

Othman further noted that the United States is unlikely to intervene in Iraq’s internal matters before the upcoming parliamentary elections. He confirmed that substantial progress and discussions concerning the disarmament issue will occur post-election, with a resolution expected by 2026. The armed factions will face a choice: disarm and integrate into the political framework or confront American forces directly.

This revelation comes amidst rising tensions between Iraqi armed groups and the US-led coalition, alongside ongoing indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran over unresolved issues.
