Baghdad: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to arrive in Iraq on Sunday for an official visit during which he will meet with senior Iraqi officials to discuss bilateral relations and the latest regional developments.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the visit comes as part of ongoing high-level consultations between the two countries, following the visit of Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Minister of Water Resources Aoun Dhiab Abdullah to Ankara last October.

During his talks, Fidan is expected to express Ankara’s appreciation for the rapid progress in bilateral relations and reaffirm Turkey’s support for Iraq’s efforts to strengthen security, stability, and prosperity. He will also reiterate Turkey’s readiness to cooperate on the ‘Development Road’ project and in counterterrorism efforts.

The Turkish minister will also address issues related to water and energy, emphasizing that Turkey views transboundary water resources as an opportunity for humanitarian cooperation, while expressing readiness to provide technical and scientific support for projects promoting the sustainable use of water in Iraq. Discussions will also cover enhancing energy cooperation following the resumption of the Iraq-Turkey oil pipeline.

Sources added that Fidan will discuss developments in Gaza and Syria, stressing the need to uphold the ceasefire in Gaza, and commending Iraq’s efforts to repatriate its citizens from northeastern Syria, which has contributed significantly to regional security.

Iraq remains one of Turkey’s key trading partners, with bilateral trade reaching nearly $12 billion as of September 2025.
