Riyadh: Al-Hilal, the runners-up in the Saudi Professional League last season, have announced the signing of English international striker Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa on a three-year contract. Watkins joined the team immediately, participating in Al-Hilal’s training session on Sunday evening.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Watkins marks Al-Hilal’s second acquisition from English clubs this summer, following Dutchman Cristian Summerville’s transfer from West Ham. The club has been active in the transfer market, with Watkins being the sixth new addition, joining Mohamed Mahzari, Mohamed Al-Sarnoukh, Sabri Dahal, and Mohamed Al-Owais.

The deal’s value is estimated to be around £55 million, approximately $64 million. In a video message posted on Instagram, the 30-year-old Watkins expressed his excitement about this new chapter while reflecting on his time at Aston Villa. He shared gratitude for his six-year journey with Villa, highlighting memorable moments and achievements, such as his contribution to the club’s European competitions.

Watkins made 278 appearances for Aston Villa, scoring 47 goals and providing 26 assists. Despite his success, he was not included in England’s plans for the 2026 World Cup due to the presence of captain Harry Kane. Aston Villa acknowledged Watkins’ contributions, particularly his role in their Europa League triumph, and wished him well for the future.

Al-Hilal, having started their season strongly with four wins in league and cup competitions, are set to face Asian champions Al-Ahli on Tuesday in a rescheduled third-round league fixture.
