Baghdad: Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani affirmed that Baghdad Metro project is one of the most important strategic transport initiatives, supporting all economic sectors in the country. A statement from his media office indicated that Al-Sudani chaired a meeting today, Sunday, to follow up on the latest measures and steps related to the implementation of Baghdad Metro project. The meeting was attended by Baghdad Governor, the Chairman of the Iraq Development Fund, a number of advisors, representatives of diplomatic missions, representatives of foreign companies interested in joining consortia to implement the project, as well as representatives of local companies and the private sector.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, during the meeting, the two consulting firms, Oliver Wyman and Systra, presented their proposals regarding the core implementation plan for the project and the economic vision related to the metro routes. Al-Sudani stressed that the project is a key pillar in supporting the country’s transport infrastructure, highlighting the government’s focus on developing urban transport, addressing traffic congestion, and constructing new ring roads.

He also noted that the new cities around Baghdad, such as Basmaiya, Al-Jawaheri, and Al-Ward, will host hundreds of thousands of housing units, and Baghdad Metro will serve as an effective link for these areas. Al-Sudani added that the project has long been part of planning initiatives, and the government has updated the route and contracted consulting firms. Some previous implementation bids were not approved due to technical and financial reasons. The government aims, through this meeting, to reach an agreement on forming the best consortium for execution and remains open to participation from reputable global companies and investors.

The detailed plan for Baghdad Metro indicates that the lines will span approximately 148 km, divided into seven routes with 64 metro stations.
