Geneva: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has confirmed that more than 1,000 irregular migrants drowned in the Mediterranean Sea in 2025.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the IOM stated in a press release that the latest data from its Missing Migrants Project reveals that the number of deaths in the central Mediterranean has surpassed 1,000 since the beginning of the year. This alarming figure highlights the urgent need for enhanced regional cooperation, the expansion of safe and regular migration pathways, and the improvement of search and rescue capabilities to prevent further loss of life.

The IOM expressed sorrow over the recent tragic incident off the Libyan coast on November 8, when a boat carrying 49 migrants capsized. Only seven individuals were rescued, while 42 others remain missing and are presumed dead.
