Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani chaired a meeting today, Sunday, aimed at addressing the issue of outstanding payments related to energy projects, specifically in the electricity and oil sectors. This significant meeting included the participation of the Minister of Finance, the Ministers of Oil and Electricity, alongside several advisors and executive officials from the involved ministries.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the discussions during the meeting centered on strategies to enhance public treasury revenues. A key point was the plan to increase the export capacity of various petroleum products, including diesel, naphtha, fuel oil, and condensates, following the achievement of self-sufficiency in these resources.
The meeting also covered the establishment of a structured mechanism for revenue collection and emphasized the importance of limiting the export of petroleum products exclusively to the State Oil Marketing Company (SOMO).
In relation to the electricity sector, Prime Minister al-Sudani instructed the Ministry of Electricity to examine economic models applicable to investment projects. He underscored the urgency of advancing economic and financial reforms, with a specific focus on leveraging the nation’s oil wealth and boosting crude oil refining capacities. This is intended to align with strategic plans aimed at producing more high-quality and valuable petroleum products.
