Basra: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani emphasized the significance of the first section of the Development Road as an essential part of the Grand Faw Port and Strategic Development Road projects. This announcement marks a pivotal moment in Iraq's infrastructure development.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Sudani inaugurated the initial 63-kilometer stretch of the Development Road, which links the Grand Faw Port to the international highway in Basra Governorate. Al-Sudani underscored the importance of this road as a vital element of the development projects that have been prioritized by the government as key milestones in Iraq's history. The inauguration coincides with the opening of the first phase of five berths and notable advancements in the submerged tunnel and navigation channel projects, showcasing significant progress from a previous 20% completion rate.
Al-Sudani highlighted that the project reflects the government's commitment to shifting from a rentier economy to one that supports agricultural, industrial, and commercial growth. This transition is facilitated by completing critical infrastructure that drives the national economy. He also mentioned ongoing discussions with regional and international partners keen on investing in the development road project, emphasizing the creation of economic partnerships to foster stability and prosperity.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the collaboration with the local government in Basra Governorate and the support from both official and public sectors to overcome challenges and advance the project's implementation. He noted that the Higher Committee for the Development Road is actively preparing for the project's requirements, leveraging the dedication of Iraq's workforce.
The development road extends from the Grand Faw Port to the Khor Al-Zubair Canal and passes through a submerged tunnel to Umm Qasr, eventually connecting with the international highway (Safwan Road). The project also includes the construction of two bridges, measuring 800 meters and 400 meters in length, respectively.
