Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani affirmed the government’s interest and commitment to keep pace with developments in the world of communications and information technology.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, a statement from al-Sudani’s media office indicated that he received a delegation from SpaceX (Starlink), the American company specializing in network, information, and communications technology, in the presence of the US Charge d’Affairs to Iraq, Joshua Harris. The meeting centered on the final stages of granting satellite internet licenses, including to SpaceX, and enhancing cooperation in the field of communications and services offered by the company, as well as its coverage areas.

The statement highlighted that Iraq has made progress in attracting international companies and securing their needs, including satellite internet systems, to sustain operations and activities. Al-Sudani emphasized the government’s commitment to keeping pace with developments in communications and information technology and the digital transformation through cooperation with SpaceX and its entry into the Iraqi market, which offers promising investment opportunities.

The Prime Minister noted that the telecommunications sector is a government priority, with a focus on preserving Iraq’s information and technological autonomy, investing in young specialists, training them, and entrusting them with operational responsibilities in the future.

The SpaceX Starlink delegation expressed their interest in working and cooperating in the information technology sector, stating their readiness to begin operations and provide satellite internet service shortly after obtaining the necessary licenses to operate in Iraq.
