Basra: Basra Gas Company, in collaboration with the World Food Program (WFP), has launched a pioneering initiative to introduce hydroponic farming systems in Basra. This initiative aims to enhance and diversify agricultural production in support of food security in the region.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, this innovative approach combines hydroponics and soilless crop production, providing farmers with a sustainable path to diversify agricultural production while improving land use and strengthening local food systems. The initiative promotes smart agricultural technologies and modern irrigation practices by equipping farmers with the tools and knowledge necessary to adapt to climate fluctuations and changes, thereby enhancing their productivity and resilience.
Khaled Al-Batayneh, Managing Director of Basra Gas Company, expressed his satisfaction with the project, stating that they are pleased to support a number of farmers in Basra. The initiative has paved the way for 80 farmers from al-Zubair district to receive guidance and assistance in realizing the full potential of their livelihoods, aligning perfectly with Basra Gas Company’s sustainable social investment strategy.
Amit Singh, Acting Representative and Country Director of the World Food Program (WFP) in Iraq, highlighted WFP’s commitment to advocating for adaptive, innovative, and resilient agriculture in the face of climate challenges in Iraq. By introducing hydroponics, the initiative showcases creative methods that maximize agricultural production and reshape farmers’ perspectives to encourage the adoption of new technologies and diversification of practices.
The initiative includes enhancing farmers’ knowledge and awareness through individual training sessions to address issues related to water scarcity and agricultural land degradation. Furthermore, it promotes opportunities for developing new water-conserving technologies in agriculture, such as hydroponics, representing a vital step towards sustainable agriculture in Basra by combining innovation with community support.
