Baghdad: The United Nations has confirmed that it will continue its operations in Iraq under the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator, in partnership with the Iraqi government and its citizens, after the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) concludes its mandate on December 31, 2025.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the UN released an official statement highlighting a new phase of collaboration with Iraq, signifying a shift towards sustainable development in the country. The statement noted that the UN’s activities will align with the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2025-2029), which was signed with the Iraqi government on December 25, 2025, serving as the guiding structure for the UN’s support of national priorities and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.

The statement further detailed that the UN team in Iraq, consisting of 26 agencies, funds, and programs, will persist in aiding Iraq by providing technical expertise, enhancing institutional capacities, and offering technical assistance in accordance with national plans and priorities. This support will contribute to the execution of Iraq’s Vision 2030.

The key areas of cooperation outlined include the enhancement of education, healthcare, and social services sectors, support for economic growth, environmental protection, climate action promotion, and the reinforcement of good governance and rule of law principles.

The United Nations reiterated its commitment to backing the Iraqi government and its people in their pursuit of inclusive and sustainable development, aiming for a future of shared prosperity for all Iraqis.
