Baghdad: The Minister of Justice, Khalid Shawani, met with the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Iraq, Albrus Kutrashev, to discuss prospects for legal and judicial cooperation between the two friendly countries.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, a ministry statement indicated that during his meeting with the Russian Ambassador at the ministry building, the Minister of Justice discussed the possibility of concluding a bilateral agreement for the transfer of prisoners between Baghdad and Moscow. This discussion is particularly pertinent given the presence of a number of Russian nationals in Iraqi correctional facilities, as well as those recently transferred from Syrian territory through official procedures after the completion of legal proceedings against them. The statement emphasized the importance of regulating this matter through a clear legal agreement in accordance with established regulations.
For his part, the Russian Ambassador expressed his country’s readiness to proceed with the procedures for concluding the agreement, which would include Russian inmates currently held in Iraqi prisons. He affirmed the Russian Federation’s keenness to develop its relations with Iraq in various fields, especially in the legal and judicial aspects between the two countries.
