Al-Hol Camp in Syria Closed After Evacuation of Last Residents

Damascus: Syrian authorities closed Al-Hol camp, the largest camp in the country, on Sunday. The camp, which was run by Kurdish forces and housed families of ISIS terrorists for years, was closed after the evacuation of its last residents, according to camp director Fadi al-Qassem.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Qassem explained that “the camp closed today,” Sunday, after “all Syrian and non-Syrian families were transferred,” adding that the government “has developed development and reintegration plans for the families away from the media spotlight.”

Al-Qassem, the government official tasked with managing the camp’s affairs, also noted that “the women and children of the camp need support for their reintegration.”

A source in a humanitarian organization that was active in Al-Hol camp confirmed on Sunday, “We evacuated all our teams working inside the camp, dismantled all our equipment and prefabricated rooms, and moved them outside the camp.”

The camp housed approximately 24,000 people, including nearly 15,000 Syrians and about 6,300 foreign women and children from 42 nationalities, most of whose countries refuse to repatriate them. However, their numbers have decreased significantly in recent weeks.
