Baghdad: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed today, Sunday, that the delimitation of maritime zones, in accordance with the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, is a sovereign matter, and no country has the right to interfere in it. The Ministry emphasized the Republic of Iraq’s respect for the relevant provisions and principles of international law.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, in a statement, the Ministry highlighted Iraq’s recent actions regarding maritime zones. It mentioned the Republic of Iraq’s deposit of the map of its maritime zones with the United Nations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that Iraqi Government Resolution No. (266) of 2025 was based on several Iraqi laws, resolutions, and statements related to Iraq’s rights and jurisdiction in maritime zones, in accordance with the provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the rules of international law.
The Ministry clarified that the decision to delineate Iraq’s maritime zones was made to consolidate and complete all previous legal procedures related to these zones into a single document supported by precise coordinates. This decision also takes into account developments in the international law of the sea, including the expansion of coastal state jurisdiction.
In the same context, the Republic of Iraq reiterated that the delineation of its maritime zones, in line with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, remains a sovereign issue. The government reaffirmed Iraq’s respect for the relevant provisions and principles of international law.
