Iraq Deposits Maritime Maps with UN to Cement Sovereignty

Baghdad: A member of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition affirmed that Iraq’s deposit of maps of its maritime zones with the United Nations is a firmly established sovereign step based on the provisions of international law, foremost among them the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and a consecration of Iraq’s legitimate rights in its territorial waters and maritime zones.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, MP Ayat Adham stated that “this step is not merely a technical procedure, but a documented legal declaration before the international community that establishes Iraq’s maritime borders according to the approved coordinates and data, and closes the door to any interpretation or transition that might infringe upon its sovereign rights.”

She added that depositing the maps with the United Nations strengthens Iraq’s position in any future negotiations or disputes. It also provides a clear legal basis that protects its maritime resources and its rights to navigation and the exploitation of natural resources, in accordance with the rules of international law.

Adham affirmed that Iraq is proceeding with consolidating its maritime autonomy through diplomatic and legal channels, in a manner that preserves its balanced relations with neighboring countries and reinforces its commitment to the principles of good neighborliness and respect for international conventions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently announced that Iraq has officially deposited its maritime map with the United Nations, a constitutional procedure that safeguards its sovereign rights in Khor Abdullah and the Dorra gas field within a formal international legal framework.
