Iraqi Cabinet Approves New Measures on Maritime Boundaries and LNG Import Platform


Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani led the eighth regular session of the Iraqi Cabinet, where several new decisions were made concerning the nation’s maritime boundaries and energy infrastructure. The session involved a comprehensive review of the country’s situation and agenda items.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Cabinet addressed the deposit of Iraq’s maritime boundaries map with the United Nations, affirming the nation’s sovereign rights over its land and territorial waters. The Cabinet emphasized Iraq’s commitment to international resolutions and the maintenance of positive relations with neighboring countries, ensuring mutual rights and national autonomy.



In an effort to improve financial management, the Cabinet reviewed measures to increase revenues and reduce expenditures across all ministries. It approved recommendations from a report monitoring the implementation of Cabinet decisions and the Prime Minister’s directives on this matter.



The session also focused on energy infrastructure, approving the Ministry of Electricity to contract with the American company Excelerate Energy to construct a floating platform for importing liquefied natural gas, as per Cabinet Resolution No. 878 of 2025.



Furthermore, the Cabinet made decisions regarding port and maritime operations. It authorized the General Company for Iraqi Ports to reduce the government’s share of port storage fees and stipulated that the joint operating partner’s share should not exceed 50%. Additionally, it reduced fees charged to shipping companies by 75% for a specified period in 2026.



The Cabinet also authorized the Ministry of Interior to proceed with electronic surveillance systems for the Iraqi-Syrian border and approved Iraq’s accession to the Charter of the Arab Space Cooperation Group, with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research tasked to complete the necessary procedures.
