Baghdad: The Reconstruction and Development parliamentary bloc has urged Parliament to expedite the convening of a session to elect the President of the Republic next week. The call was made on Thursday amidst concerns over delays in the political process.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the bloc emphasized the importance of adhering to the constitutional timelines outlined in the Iraqi Constitution. They noted that while the Speaker of Parliament and his deputies were elected nearly two months ago, the delay in electing the President of the Republic remains a clear violation of these timelines. The bloc stressed the need for the Speaker of Parliament to convene a dedicated session to elect the President, highlighting the negative impact of disregarding deadlines and the resulting obstruction of state obligations.
The statement also urged Kurdish forces to finalize their candidate for the presidency before the session, to facilitate progress in completing constitutional requirements. This includes forming a fully empowered government that aligns with election results, capable of providing services, protecting national interests, and ensuring political and institutional stability.
The bloc warned that the prolonged existence of a government with limited powers poses a direct threat to the nation and its institutions. They indicated that if the current paralysis continues, the Reconstruction and Development Bloc is prepared to resort to every constitutional means available to end the stalemate and uphold the constitutional process.
