Second Phase of U.S.-Iran Nuclear Negotiations Commences in Geneva

Geneva: The second phase of the third round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States regarding the Iranian nuclear program began in Geneva. The discussions, part of ongoing efforts to reach a consensus on nuclear activities, were briefly adjourned after commencing this morning to allow time for further consultations.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the talks saw the Iranian delegation led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, while the United States was represented by Special Envoy Steve Wittkopf and Jared Kushner. Despite the resumption of dialogue, a senior Iranian official indicated on Thursday that the discussions had surfaced new proposals necessitating consultation with Tehran. Nonetheless, some differences persist between the parties.

The primary issues of contention include the permitted level of uranium enrichment, the future of the highly enriched uranium stockpile estimated at approximately 400 kg, and the United States’ insistence on implementing a stringent monitoring mechanism for Iran’s nuclear activities. These topics remain central to the negotiations, with both sides seeking a mutually acceptable resolution.
