Foreign Ministry Asserts Iraq’s Sovereign Right Over Maritime Demarcation Amid Egyptian Concerns


Baghdad: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by the Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations, Ambassador Mohammed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom, hosted the Egyptian Ambassador to Iraq, Ahmed Samir Helmy, at the Ministry headquarters following the statement issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration regarding Iraq’s deposit of its maritime demarcation map with the United Nations.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that “Iraq’s decision to deposit its maritime boundaries map is a sovereign right that cannot be revoked.” He clarified Iraq’s position and observations regarding the Egyptian statement, which overlooked Iraq’s opinion, stance, and the measures it has taken in full compliance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. He emphasized Iraq’s transparency, reflecting its commitment to addressing all related issues through legal and diplomatic channels, safeguarding its sovereignty and preserving its national rights.



Iraq expressed regret over the issuance of such a statement, given the resulting dissatisfaction at both the official and popular levels. The Undersecretary also stressed the depth and strength of the fraternal and historical relations between Iraq and Egypt, emphasizing the importance of exercising accuracy and objectivity in official statements and positions due to their direct impact on bilateral relations. He further emphasized that any statement must include equal respect for the sovereignty of both countries. He expressed Iraq’s pride in its relations with Egypt and its keenness to develop them in various fields.



The Egyptian Ambassador expressed gratitude for the information provided by the Undersecretary regarding the situation between the two countries and the level of cooperation on the issue of maritime border demarcation. He emphasized that Egypt’s concern stemmed from its commitment to supporting security and stability between the two countries. He also indicated that he would ensure Iraq’s message was conveyed to the Egyptian leadership clearly and in detail, reflecting the Iraqi perspective and the developments between the two countries.
