Baghdad: The Interior Minister, Abdul-Amir al-Shammari, has ordered an investigation into the riots and gunfire that erupted during a campaign aimed at removing encroachments in the al-Hurriya area. This directive was issued after a security force, accompanied by personnel from the Baghdad Municipality, encountered resistance while executing their duties.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Interior Ministry released a statement detailing that the incident included stone-throwing at the security force and gunfire, which resulted in injuries among both citizens and security personnel. The Interior Minister responded by directing the formation of an investigative committee to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The committee's mandate includes determining responsibilities and holding accountable those involved, whether it pertains to the security force or the broader aspects of the incident, in accordance with legal standards. The ministry's statement further stressed its dual commitment to safeguarding citizens and maintaining public security, while also enforcing laws and addressing any violations against state institutions or misuse of force against the populace.
