Baghdad: Justice Minister Khalid Shawani affirmed on Sunday that the security situation in prisons is reassuring, noting that all necessary preventative measures have been taken.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry of Justice stated in a press release that "Justice Minister Khalid Shawani conducted a field visit to Taji Central Prison to directly assess the level of security and precautionary measures implemented within the correctional facility by the operational force and security personnel on duty, as part of monitoring security readiness within the prison sections."

During the visit, the minister directed "the need to intensify efforts and deal firmly and decisively with any emergency that may arise, in order to ensure the maintenance of stability and prevent any security breaches."

According to the statement, Shawani inspected the prison's external fortification system, as well as the camera surveillance systems and monitoring and control mechanisms. After directly observing the security measures in place, he commended the efforts exerted by the security agencies in implementing these measures, emphasizing that "the security situation in prisons is reassuring."

He added that "the relevant authorities have taken all necessary preventative measures to contribute to providing security and stability within the prison and enhancing its level of protection."

The minister toured several prison sections, meeting with inmates and directly assessing their needs. He directed that "the necessary requirements be provided to launch the electronic visitation service at Taji Prison, given its important role in facilitating communication between inmates and their families and reducing overcrowding during in-person visits."

According to the statement, Shawani also visited the command headquarters and the command unit of Taji Central Prison, praising "the efforts exerted by the security forces in carrying out their duties." He emphasized that "these efforts directly contribute to consolidating security and stability and protecting correctional institutions, thus serving the best interests of Iraq."
