Ankara: The Turkish Ministry of Defense has announced the preparation for the deployment of the Patriot air defense system in Malatya province, located in eastern Turkey. This move is part of coordinated efforts with NATO to enhance the protection of Turkish airspace in response to rising regional tensions.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the ministry released a statement emphasizing the Turkish Armed Forces’ commitment to ensuring the country’s security amid recent regional developments. The statement highlighted Ankara’s proactive measures to safeguard its borders and airspace, with ongoing consultations with NATO and allied nations regarding defense and security strategies.

The ministry’s statement also detailed that the alliance has intensified its air and missile defense measures within the region. It was noted that the Patriot system, presently positioned in Malatya province, is being readied for operational deployment to aid in defending Turkish airspace.

The Turkish Ministry of Defense reiterated Turkey’s intention to continue collaborating with NATO on defense and security matters and to observe developments in partnership with the alliance and its allies. This cooperation aims to contribute to maintaining regional peace and stability.

The announcement follows escalating regional tensions after US and Israeli strikes on Iran since February 28, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,300 individuals, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
