Baghdad: The Chaldean Patriarch of Iraq and the world, Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako, has announced his resignation from the leadership of the Chaldean Catholic Church, a decision that has been accepted by Pope Leo XIV.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Cardinal Sako, who had considered resigning two years ago upon reaching the age of 75, made the announcement stating that his resignation was submitted of his own free will. He expressed his desire to devote himself quietly to prayer, writing, and simple service. His initial discussion regarding resignation was with the late Pope Francis, who encouraged him to remain in his position at the time. However, on March 9, 2026, he formally submitted his resignation, which was accepted by Pope Leo XIV and requested to be officially published on March 10.

Cardinal Sako reflected on his tenure, highlighting the challenges he faced in leading the Chaldean Church under difficult circumstances. He emphasized his efforts in maintaining the unity of the Church’s institutions and defending the rights of Iraqis and Christians both domestically and internationally. Over his 13 years as Patriarch, he provided guidance and care to the Church.

In his statement, Cardinal Sako expressed hope for the future of the Chaldean Catholic Church, wishing for a new patriarch who possesses intellect, theological foundation, courage, wisdom, and a sense of humor. He assured that he would respect the new leader and refrain from interfering in his duties, expressing confidence in divine oversight over the Church.

Furthermore, Cardinal Sako shared details of his personal finances, noting that his wealth comprises his service, the books he has published, and modest savings from his priestly service and the sale of his family home. He does not own any property or a car, underscoring his commitment to his ecclesiastical duties over material wealth.
