Baghdad: During a tree-planting campaign, the president of Al-Mustansiriya University emphasized the importance of raising environmental awareness.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the President of Al-Mustansiriya University, Safaa Taqi Al-Issawi, launched a campaign today to plant trees in the university’s gardens and several colleges, on the occasion of National Tree Planting Day and as part of the national initiative to support energy and reduce emissions. The campaign was attended by the university president’s assistants, college deans, and a number of faculty members and staff.
Al-Issawi emphasized the university’s commitment to supporting environmental initiatives and encouraging volunteer work that contributes to increasing green spaces and raising environmental awareness within the university community. He stressed the importance of involving students in environmental activities that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The event included an awareness workshop at the College of Science, which addressed the importance of tree planting in achieving environmental sustainability and restoring balance to ecosystems, as well as introducing the types of trees and plants suitable for the university’s environment.
It is worth noting that Iraq has designated March 12th of each year as National Tree Planting Day to encourage people to plant and care for trees and palms, and to protect vegetation. This day also aims to increase green spaces, restore and protect natural forests, and give more attention to restoring cultivated areas and planting new green spaces.
