London: Britain is considering deploying additional forces to the Gulf after withdrawing its last minesweeper from the region. British Defense Secretary John Healey confirmed on Thursday that the UK is exploring new options for reinforcing its military presence in response to increased Iranian attacks on ships.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Healey mentioned in a press statement that Britain already maintains independent mine-clearing systems in the Gulf. This statement comes in the wake of the Royal Navy’s recent announcement regarding the return of HMS Middleton, its final minesweeper stationed in Bahrain, which returned home on March 1st.
The Royal Navy noted that HMS Middleton, a ship over 40 years old, was deemed no longer seaworthy. As Britain assesses its future military strategy in the Gulf, the focus remains on ensuring maritime security amidst rising tensions in the region.
