Baghdad: The President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faiq Zidan, emphasized the crucial role of judicial independence as the foundation of a modern constitutional state. He stated that the Iraqi judiciary fulfills its responsibilities without any influence from the legislative and executive branches, or other entities. Judge Zidan shared these insights during a dialogue session for heads of Arab supreme courts in Milan, Italy, organized by the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States through the Arab Center for Legal and Judicial Research.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Judge Zidan highlighted that the Iraqi Constitution and the Law of the Supreme Judicial Council ensure complete independence of the judiciary, making it an autonomous authority aligned with international principles of judicial independence. He elaborated on the Supreme Judicial Council’s efforts to reinforce this independence, thereby enhancing public trust in the judiciary, safeguarding rights, and upholding the rule of law. The Council is committed to establishing a modern and effective judicial system to address security and legal challenges.

Judge Zidan also mentioned the Council’s focus on enhancing the scientific and professional skills of judges, public prosecutors, and administrative staff through annual specialized training programs. These programs, developed in collaboration with international organizations, concentrate on areas such as combating terrorism, cybercrime, and transnational organized crime. He further explained that the Iraqi Judicial Institute is instrumental in preparing and qualifying judges and public prosecutors, enabling them to adapt to legislative, legal, and technological advancements.
