Baghdad: The climate change team at the Iraqi Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities approved awareness programs and plans to protect cultural heritage from the effects of climate change. The Climate Change Team affirmed its commitment by completing awareness programs, promoting environmentally friendly practices, and integrating sustainability standards into institutional work plans. The team’s regular meeting took place at the National House of Iraqi Manuscripts.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting included discussions on the implementation phases of the climate change plan and a review of the strategic visions to confront environmental challenges. Emphasis was placed on the importance of awareness activities to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, aligning with the Ministry of Culture’s directives and the Cabinet’s decision to strengthen environmental awareness within government institutions.

The team’s work began with a tour of the Iraqi National Manuscript House, where Director General Dr. Ahmed Al-Ulayawi highlighted the challenges climate change poses to manuscript preservation. He detailed the measures being taken to protect these cultural treasures and ensure their sustainability for future generations.

Dr. Muntaser Al-Hasnawi, Director General of the Conference Palace Department and team head, praised the Ministry’s departments for implementing environmental programs. He stressed the importance of integrated work among cultural institutions to foster a culture of sustainability and translate it into practical practices for environmental protection and cultural heritage preservation.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to prepare a comprehensive report for Acting Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities, Sarwa Abdul Wahid. The report will include key recommendations and a plan for future activities to promote sustainable environmental practices and support the Ministry’s efforts in addressing climate change challenges.
