Baghdad: An agreement has been reached on organizing a parliamentary-governmental meeting with the Prime Minister to address the issues related to the appointment of graduates from the medical group and the implementation of the Medical Residency Law.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Parliamentary Committee on Health, Drug Control, and Psychotropic Substances, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has decided to request a joint meeting with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance. The aim of this meeting is to address the challenges surrounding centralized appointments for medical program graduates and the implementation of the Medical Residency Law.

During a recent meeting with Health Minister Abdul Hussein al-Moussawi, the committee reviewed amendments to the laws governing the Ministry of Health, health insurance, medical residency, and provincial councils not organized into a region. Discussions also covered the transfer of powers from the Ministry of Health to provincial authorities. The committee committed to monitoring the Ministry of Health’s progress in completing these legislative procedures and ensuring their prompt referral to the Committee on Health, Drug Control, and Psychotropic Substances for enactment.

The committee also addressed the issue of centralized appointments and the implementation of the Medical Residency Law No. (6) of 2000. Completing the appointment procedures for graduates from 2023, 2024, and 2025 was a focal point, highlighting the necessity for job positions and financial allocations.

In addition, discussions with the Ministry of Health emphasized the urgent need for funding to secure drug contracts and operational budgets for health departments in Baghdad and the provinces. Ensuring the continuous operation of health institutions and preventing service disruptions for citizens was stressed. The upcoming meeting with the Prime Minister will also address the ongoing funding shortage, seeking solutions to bolster the health sector.
