Islamabad: Pakistan and Iran have agreed to enhance cooperation in preventing illegal immigration and human trafficking, and to intensify efforts to combat drug smuggling and terrorism emanating from the Afghan border.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed his country's readiness to expand cooperation with Iran in all fields during his meeting with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, who is on an official visit to Pakistan.

The two ministers held bilateral talks followed by delegation-level discussions, during which they reviewed bilateral relations, trade, regional developments, and avenues for cooperation. The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in combating terrorism and drugs, preventing illegal immigration, and combating human trafficking.

They stressed the need for concerted efforts to curb drug smuggling and terrorism originating from the Afghan border, and agreed to improve coordination between relevant institutions in both countries.

The statement quoted Naqvi as praising the exceptional role played by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and Momeni in promoting peace, expressing his hope for achieving peace soon. Momeni arrived Monday evening and on Tuesday met with Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, where they discussed regional and bilateral security issues and effective border management, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations Department.
