Washington: The US House of Representatives took decisive action to prevent a federal government shutdown before the upcoming midterm elections by approving a temporary funding bill. The measure, designed to keep government operations running smoothly, extends funding until December 4.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, House Republican leaders are keen to avoid a shutdown that might sway voter sentiment negatively as they approach the November polls. With the deadline for a funding decision still over two months away, the urgency stems from a desire to maintain government stability and public confidence.

House Speaker Mike Johnson issued a challenge to Democrats, asserting that any opposition to the bill would place the responsibility for any potential shutdown squarely on their shoulders. “If they vote against it, they alone will bear the responsibility for the chaos that will ensue if the government is shut down after September 30,” he stated.

The bill was passed with a vote tally of 220 to 205, primarily divided along party lines. This early passage of a temporary funding bill is notable, as Congress typically addresses such matters much closer to the end of the fiscal year. The usual practice involves lawmakers taking action just days or even hours before the deadline.
